Conversion Formula

Conversion factors follow NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.9.1 (area), and the BLM Public Land Survey System study guide. Links are in Sources below.

square miles = square feet ÷ 27,878,400

square feet = square miles × 27,878,400  (1 sq ft = 3.587006427915519 × 10⁻⁸ sq mi)

Dividing is exact arithmetic on a definitional factor: 5,280 × 5,280 = 27,878,400, and 640 × 43,560 = 27,878,400. Both routes agree because they describe the same square. Going the other way, see the square miles to square feet converter.

Worked Example

A subdivision plat gives a parcel as 4,356,000 sq ft. The county report wants square miles.

  1. Divide: 4,356,000 ÷ 27,878,400 = 0.15625 sq mi — and it terminates, no rounding.
  2. Sanity-check through acres: 4,356,000 ÷ 43,560 = 100 acres, and 100 ÷ 640 = 0.15625. ✓
  3. Or use the shortcut below: 100 × 15,625 = 1,562,500, move the decimal seven places → 0.1562500. ✓ Three routes, one answer.
  4. Price it: at $2.75 per sq ft the parcel is 4,356,000 × 2.75 = $11,979,000, which is $119,790 per acre. Check: $2.75 × 43,560 = $119,790 — the per-acre rate does not depend on this parcel at all.

Now a number that does not terminate: 5,000,000 sq ft = 114.784206 acres = 0.1793503214 sq mi at ten places. Writing "0.179 sq mi" in a report reads 0.195% small — 9,766 sq ft, or 0.22 of an acre, gone from the page.

How many decimal places do you actually need?

This is the question the reverse direction never raises. Square miles to square feet always lands on a whole number; square feet to square miles usually does not, and short rounding is not harmless.

AreaFull value (sq mi)What 4 decimal places costs you
6,000 sq ft (60 × 100 lot)0.0002152203860.0002 — reads 7.07% small, a loss of 424 sq ft
1,000,000 sq ft0.0358700642790.0359 — reads 0.08% large, a gain of 835 sq ft
4,356,000 sq ft (100 acres)0.15625 exactly0.1563 — reads 0.03% large, a gain of 1,394 sq ft
27,878,400 sq ft (1 sq mi)11.0000 — nothing lost

Rule of thumb: keep at least six significant figures. For anything under an acre that means eight to ten decimal places, which is why the box above prints ten. A square mile is 27.9 million times a square foot, so the leading zeros are structure, not padding.

The acres shortcut: × 15,625

Most real sq ft figures come from acreage anyway, and acres to square miles has a clean trick. Since 640 × 15,625 = 10,000,000, multiplying acres by 15,625 and shifting the decimal seven places gives square miles exactly.

Acres× 15,625Square miles
115,6250.0015625
578,1250.0078125
10156,2500.015625
40625,0000.0625
1001,562,5000.15625
1602,500,0000.25
64010,000,0001

This works for every whole number of acres, not just the aliquot ones: an acre is 1/640 of a square mile, and 640 = 2⁷ × 5 has no factor of 3 or 11, so the decimal always terminates within seven places. Fractional acreage (114.784206 acres) does not get the same guarantee.

What is a square mile?

A square mile is the area of a square one mile on each side. The mile is exact: 1 mi = 5,280 ft = 1,760 yd = 80 chains = 1,609.344 m, the last from 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly. So 1 sq mi = 5,280² = 27,878,400 sq ft = 1,609.344² = 2,589,988.110336 m² = 2.589988110336 km². NIST prints that as 2.589 988 E+06 m², rounded to seven significant figures.

In the Public Land Survey System a square mile is a section: the BLM study guide states "One square mile equates to 640 acres or 80 chains by 80 chains." A township is 36 of them, nominally 36 sq mi.

One caveat worth carrying into any deed work: NIST lists a second row, square mile based on the U.S. survey foot, at 2.589 998 E+06 m². Both rows are still 27,878,400 sq ft — only the metre value differs, by about 10 m² (≈106 sq ft) per square mile. The survey foot was deprecated on December 31, 2022.

What is a square foot?

A square foot is the area of a square one foot on each side: 12 in × 12 in = 144 sq in, or 0.09290304 m² exactly. It is the unit US listings, plats and material orders use.

Check the chain both ways: 27,878,400 sq ft × 0.09290304 m² = 2,589,988.110336 m², and 2,589,988.110336 ÷ 0.09290304 = 27,878,400. Division here undoes multiplication exactly, which is what makes the ten decimals in the box above meaningful rather than decorative.

1 township as a square31,680 ft × 31,680 ft6 × 5,280 = 31,680; boundary walk 24 miles

Two things this table is for. First, area ratios do not carry over to side lengths: a million square feet has a side that is 18.94% of a mile but an area that is only 3.59% of a square mile, because 0.189394² = 0.0358701. Second, converting to square miles tells you nothing about perimeter — a 6,000 sq ft lot needs 309.84 ft or 320 ft of fence depending on shape, and both are 0.0002152204 sq mi.

Why 1 sq ft is a repeating decimal in square miles

The factor 27,878,400 factorises as 2¹⁰ × 3² × 5² × 11² (it is 5,280², and 5,280 = 2⁵ × 3 × 5 × 11). A fraction terminates in base 10 only when its reduced denominator is made of 2s and 5s. The 3² and 11² left in the denominator mean 1 sq ft never lands:

1 sq ft = 0.0000000358 7006427915518824609733 7006427915518824609733… sq mi

Ten non-repeating digits, then a 22-digit repetend. Long division by hand confirms it, and so does the box above — the tenth decimal is a rounding, not a terminating digit. That is also why whole-acre inputs look so much tidier than raw sq ft inputs: 43,560 and 27,878,400 share enough factors to cancel the 3² and 11² away.

Cost per square foot at section scale

The usual reason to make this conversion at all is a rate quoted per square foot that has to be applied to a very large tract — or the reverse, a land price quoted per acre that has to be compared with a per-sq-ft offer.

Rate per sq ftPer acre (× 43,560)Per square mile (× 27,878,400)
$0.10$4,356$2,787,840
$0.25$10,890$6,969,600
$1.00$43,560$27,878,400
$2.75$119,790$76,665,600

These are arithmetic on assumed rates, not market prices — nothing here claims what land costs anywhere. The relationship is what is exact: per-acre is always per-sq-ft × 43,560, and per-sq-mi is always per-acre × 640.

FAQ

How do I convert square feet to square miles?

Divide by 27,878,400. A mile is 5,280 ft and area scales by the square, so 5,280 × 5,280 = 27,878,400 sq ft per square mile, and 1 sq ft = 3.587006427915519 × 10⁻⁸ sq mi. This calculator prints 10 decimal places, because at 4 places a small parcel rounds to almost nothing.

How many square feet are in one square mile?

Exactly 27,878,400, which is also 640 acres × 43,560 sq ft, or 3,097,600 sq yd, or 4,014,489,600 sq in, or 2,589,988.110336 m². The figure is definitional rather than measured, so it never needs rounding.

Is there a shortcut for acres to square miles?

Yes. Because 640 × 15,625 = 10,000,000, multiply acres by 15,625 and move the decimal point seven places left. 100 acres × 15,625 = 1,562,500, so 0.15625 sq mi exactly. Any whole number of acres terminates within seven decimal places, since an acre is 1/640 of a square mile and 640 is 2⁷ × 5.

Why does my square-mile answer have so many decimal places?

Because 27,878,400 = 2¹⁰ × 3² × 5² × 11². The 3² and 11² in the denominator mean 1 sq ft is a repeating decimal in square miles: 0.0000000358 then 7006427915518824609733 repeating, a 22-digit repetend. Whole-acre inputs are the exception — those terminate.

How many acres are in a square mile, and what is a section?

640 acres exactly. In the Public Land Survey System one square mile is a section, and the BLM study guide states that one square mile equates to 640 acres or 80 chains by 80 chains. A township is a 6 × 6 grid of sections, nominally 36 sq mi = 1,003,622,400 sq ft. Sections are nominal: convergence means not all sections really contain 640 acres.

What does a per-square-foot price come to across a square mile?

Multiply the rate by 27,878,400. Ten cents per sq ft is $2,787,840 per square mile, and $4,356 per acre. The per-acre figure is always the per-sq-ft rate × 43,560, whatever the parcel size, so the two quotes can be reconciled without knowing the shape of anything.
