How to Estimate Flooring Square Footage

  1. Measure every room that will receive the same flooring. Use the multi-room calculator if needed.
  2. Add a waste factor — 10% for straight-lay hardwood or LVP, 15% for diagonal patterns, 20% for complex herringbone.
  3. Divide by coverage per box to get the number of boxes to order (most hardwood boxes cover 18–24 sq ft).
  4. Keep one extra box on hand for future repairs — hardwood and LVP are often discontinued every 2–3 years.

Calculating Boards or Planks Per Box

Most hardwood and LVP boxes state their coverage in sq ft. To estimate how many boxes you need:

Boxes needed = ceil( (Total sq ft × (1 + waste%)) / coverage per box )

Example: a 300 sq ft room with 10% waste and 24 sq ft/box = ceil(330 / 24) = 14 boxes. Enter the coverage per box in the optional field above to have the calculator do this for you automatically.

Subfloor & Underlayment Checklist

  1. Level within 3/16" per 10 ft before any click-lock plank. Fill low spots with leveling compound.
  2. Moisture test concrete slabs. Any reading above 3 lb/1,000 sq ft/24 hr requires a vapor barrier.
  3. Underlayment: order the same sq ft as the flooring. Standard 100 sq ft rolls for laminate; many LVPs have attached pad.
  4. Transitions: plan T-molding every 40 linear ft or between rooms to absorb expansion.
  5. Acclimate solid and engineered hardwood 48–72 hours on site before install.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much flooring do I need for a 12x15 room?

12 × 15 = 180 sq ft. With 10% waste → order for 198 sq ft. See 12x15 room details for unit conversions and typical uses.

What's a typical waste factor for flooring?

10% for straight installs, 15% for diagonal patterns, and up to 20% for herringbone or large-format tile. Beginners should add a couple of extra percent.

Should I include closets and hallways?

Yes, if the same flooring runs through them. Use the multi-room calculator to sum several areas and keep the total in one order.

Do I need extra for future repairs?

Keep one extra unopened box. Hardwood dye lots change between production runs, so matching years later can be difficult.

How do I calculate flooring boxes?

Divide total square footage (with waste) by the square feet per box and round up. The calculator above includes a coverage-per-box input to do this automatically.

What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is milled from one piece; engineered has a thin hardwood veneer over a moisture-resistant plywood core. Both install similarly, but engineered is better over concrete.

Can I install LVP over existing tile?

Yes if the tile is flat and structurally sound. Fill large grout lines with leveling compound first. Click-lock LVP handles small surface imperfections well.

How much underlayment do I need?

Order the same square footage of underlayment as the flooring. Standard 100 sq ft rolls are sold for laminate and engineered hardwood. Many modern LVPs have built-in pad.
