L-Shape Square Footage Calculator
Turn any L-shaped room into two rectangles and add the areas. The calculator visualizes both rectangles with colored blocks.

L-shape = two rectangles sharing a corner.
Add one row per rectangle and we'll sum them.
How to Measure an L-Shape Room
- Draw the floor plan from above, treating the L as two rectangles that share a corner.
- Measure Rectangle 1 — the longer of the two (typically the main part of the room).
- Measure Rectangle 2 — the smaller leg of the L.
- Enter both sets of dimensions above. The calculator adds them for you.
Tip: You can also use the Irregular tab to add three or more rectangles if your floor plan is more complex.
Common L-Shape Room Examples
- Kitchen + dining nook: kitchen 12 × 10 (120 sq ft) + nook 8 × 6 (48 sq ft) = 168 sq ft
- Bedroom + walk-in closet: bedroom 14 × 12 (168 sq ft) + closet 6 × 5 (30 sq ft) = 198 sq ft
- Living room + entry alcove: living room 20 × 15 (300 sq ft) + alcove 8 × 6 (48 sq ft) = 348 sq ft
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the square footage of an L-shaped room?
Split the L into two rectangles, calculate the area of each (length × width), and add them together. The calculator above does this in one step.
Can I handle more than two rectangles?
Yes. Switch to the Irregular Room tab and add as many rectangles as you need.
