What is a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 square metres — a square 100 m on a side. The name is arithmetic: hecto- is the SI prefix for 100 and an are is 100 m², so a hectare is 100 ares. NIST SP 811 Appendix B.9.1 lists both rows, are (a) → 1.0E+02 m² and hectare (ha) → 1.0E+04 m², and prints exact factors in boldface.
The hectare is the standard land unit outside the United States and the unit most international agriculture, forestry and land-registry data report in. Its ladder is clean: 100 ha = 1 km².
What is a square foot?
A square foot is the area of a square one foot on each side: 12 in × 12 in = 144 sq in, or 0.09290304 m². It is a defined quantity, not a measured one: the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m and 0.3048² = 0.09290304. NIST SP 811 prints it as 9.290 304 E−02 m².
Dividing that by 10,000 m² per hectare gives the 0.000009290304 factor at the top of this page — one step, no intermediate rounding.

A square hectare is about 1.57 times the side length of a square acre, because 2.471053814671653 acres fit in a hectare and √2.471053814671653 = 1.5719. Area ratios do not carry over to side lengths or to fencing: the perimeter of a square hectare is 400 m (1,312.34 ft), against 282.84 m (927.96 ft) for a square half-hectare. Half the area is not half the fence — it is 71% of it.
When to stop using square feet
Square feet are the right unit until the number gets long enough to misread. A practical line:
- Under 43,560 sq ft — stay in square feet. This covers rooms, houses, and most suburban lots.
- 43,560 to about 1,000,000 sq ft — acres in the US, hectares for anything cross-border. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 0.40468564224 ha.
- Above about 10,000,000 sq ft — hectares or square miles. 27,878,400 sq ft is exactly one square mile and one PLSS section (640 acres = 258.998811 ha).
- Any figure that has to survive an audit — keep the working in square metres, convert once at the end, and write down which foot the source used.
How much precision is worth writing down
0.0001 ha = 1 m² = 10.763910416709722 sq ft. That is smaller than a parking space, so four decimal places of hectare is already finer than any house-lot survey.
