What is a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 square metres — a square 100 m on each side. The name is arithmetic: hecto- is the SI prefix for 100, and an are is 100 m², so a hectare is 100 ares = 100 × 100 m² = 10,000 m². NIST SP 811 Appendix B.9.1 lists both rows, are (a) → 1.0E+02 m² and hectare (ha) → 1.0E+04 m², and prints exact factors in boldface.
The hectare is not one of the seven SI base units, but it is the standard land unit almost everywhere outside the United States, and it is what international agriculture, forestry and land-registry data report. Its scale ladder is clean: 100 ha = 1 km², and 10,000 ha = 100 km².
What is a square foot?
A square foot is the area of a square one foot on each side: 12 in × 12 in = 144 sq in, or 0.09290304 m² exactly. It is exact because the international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 m, and 0.3048² = 0.09290304. NIST SP 811 lists it as 9.290 304 E−02 m².
Dividing 10,000 m² by 0.09290304 m² per sq ft gives the factor on this page. Equivalently, 100 m ÷ 0.3048 m/ft = 328.0839895 ft, and 328.0839895² = 107,639.104167 — the same number reached by side length instead of by area.
What shape is a hectare?
Any shape with an area of 10,000 m². The ones worth having in mind:

Shape changes the fencing bill even when the area does not. A square hectare needs 400 m of boundary; the 400 m × 25 m strip needs 850 m — more than twice the fence for the same land. Rounding, and when to round up
Forward, the widget trims its answer to two decimals once it passes 1,000 sq ft (four below that). Typed the other way it keeps eight places, because 1 sq ft is only 0.000009290304 ha and two places would round a whole lot down to 0.01. Either way that is more precision than a land transaction needs and less than the factor carries. Use this instead:
- Comparing listings — round to whole square feet. The 0.104167 tail is 0.0001% and cannot change a ranking.
- Ordering seed, fertiliser or turf — round the area up to the next whole hectare or the next bag size. Under-ordering costs a second delivery.
- Fencing or irrigation line — do not use area at all; you need perimeter, and perimeter depends on shape (see above).
- Legal or tax figures — convert from the figure written in the deed, not from a rounded intermediate. Carry full precision through the calculation and round only the final answer.

How many square feet are in one hectare?
107,639.104167 square feet. A hectare is exactly 10,000 m² and a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², so 10,000 ÷ 0.09290304 = 107,639.10416709722 sq ft. The decimal never terminates in base 10, which is why every printed value is rounded.
How do I convert hectares to square feet without a calculator?
Multiply by 107,639.1. A quick mental estimate: multiply hectares by 10,000 to get square metres, then multiply by 10.76 to get square feet. For 2.5 ha that is 25,000 × 10.76 = 269,000 sq ft, against an exact 269,097.76 sq ft, so the estimate is about 0.04% low.
How many acres are in one hectare?

What are the dimensions of one hectare?
As a square, 100 m × 100 m, which is 328.08 ft × 328.08 ft (100 ÷ 0.3048 = 328.0839895 ft). As a circle, radius 56.42 m or 185.10 ft. Any shape whose area is 10,000 m² is a hectare, so 200 × 50 m and 250 × 40 m count too, and area alone never tells you the side lengths.
Why is a hectare 10,000 square meters?
Because a hectare is 100 ares and an are is 100 m². NIST SP 811 Appendix B.9.1 lists both: are (a) = 1.0E+02 m² and hectare (ha) = 1.0E+04 m², and NIST marks factors in boldface as exact. The hecto- prefix means 100, so 100 × 100 m² = 10,000 m² with no measured constant involved.
How do I convert square feet back to hectares?
