How to Calculate Square Feet
A step-by-step guide to calculating square footage for any space — from a simple bedroom to a multi-room house or a curved patio — with worked examples and shortcuts.

L-shape = two rectangles sharing a corner.
Add one row per rectangle and we'll sum them.
What Does "Square Feet" Mean?
A square foot is the area of a square whose sides are exactly one foot (12 inches) long. Area is two-dimensional — it tells you how much surface something covers — so square feet is a two-dimensional unit of measurement. Abbreviations: sq ft, ft², or sf.
Step 1 — Identify the Shape
Before you measure anything, figure out what shape you have. Most spaces fall into one of these categories:
- Rectangle or Square: the most common — bedrooms, offices, kitchens.
- Circle: round patios, above-ground pools, garden beds, silos.
- Triangle: gable walls, lot corners, decorative rooms.
- Trapezoid: lots with two parallel sides of different length.
- L-Shape: rooms with a notch — two rectangles joined at a corner.
- Irregular: anything else — break it into rectangles.
Step 2 — Measure the Dimensions
Use a tape measure for rooms under 12 ft, or a laser distance measurer for anything bigger. Record dimensions in decimal feet (e.g., 12.5 ft) or in feet and inches.
Measuring tips
- Measure at baseboards, not along the floor. Walls sometimes bow.
- Check whether the room is square by measuring both diagonals — if they differ by more than 1 inch, treat the room as an L-Shape or Irregular.
- Keep units consistent. Don't mix feet with meters in the same calculation (though our calculator handles mixed units automatically).
Step 3 — Apply the Right Formula
Rectangle / Square
Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Example: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft.
Circle
Area (sq ft) = π × radius²
Example: A 6-foot-radius circle has π × 6² = 36π ≈ 113.10 sq ft.
Triangle
Area (sq ft) = (Base × Height) / 2
"Height" means the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite vertex — not the slant length.
Example: Base 14 ft, height 9 ft → (14 × 9) / 2 = 63 sq ft.
Trapezoid
Area (sq ft) = ((a + b) / 2) × height
Where a and b are the two parallel sides.
L-Shape / Irregular
Split the space into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle separately and add them up.
Step 4 — Convert Units (If Needed)
If your tape measure gives you different units, convert to feet first:
- Inches → feet: divide by 12. 84 in ÷ 12 = 7 ft.
- Yards → feet: multiply by 3. 4 yd × 3 = 12 ft.
- Meters → feet: multiply by 3.2808. 3.5 m × 3.2808 ≈ 11.48 ft.
- Centimeters → feet: divide by 30.48. 300 cm / 30.48 ≈ 9.84 ft.
The calculator at the top of this page handles all five input units automatically.
Worked Example: An L-Shaped Living Room
You're carpeting a living room shaped like an L. The main part is 20 ft × 15 ft. The alcove is 8 ft × 6 ft.
- Main: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft.
- Alcove: 8 × 6 = 48 sq ft.
- Total: 300 + 48 = 348 sq ft.
- Add 10% waste: 348 × 1.10 = 383 sq ft to order.
Worked Example: A Round Patio
You're pouring a circular concrete patio with a 12-ft diameter (6-ft radius).
- Radius² = 6² = 36.
- Area = π × 36 = 113.10 sq ft.
- Concrete depth 4 inches = 0.33 ft.
- Volume = 113.10 × 0.33 = 37.3 cu ft → 1.38 cubic yards of concrete.
Common Square Footage Mistakes
- Rounding dimensions up to the nearest foot. That can introduce a 4% error in area.
- Confusing diameter with radius for circles. Always use radius (half the diameter).
- Using slant length as height for triangles. Always use the perpendicular height.
- Forgetting to subtract openings when measuring wall area for paint or tile.
- Mixing interior and exterior measurements for a house total. Follow ANSI Z765 (exterior for real estate, interior for flooring).

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate square feet?
For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width in feet. For other shapes, use the formula for that shape — all listed above.
How do I calculate square feet from inches?
Divide each inch measurement by 12 to convert to feet, then multiply. Or select "in" in the calculator above.
How do I figure out the square footage of an irregular room?
Break it into rectangles. Measure each rectangle, multiply length × width, then add the results together.
How do I calculate the square footage of a house?
Measure every heated, finished room. Add the areas together. Exclude garages and unfinished basements per the ANSI Z765 standard.
